CNC Technology

  • CNC stands for “computer numerical coding.”
  • Design software translates designs into G-code which then read by the CNC machine.
  • The Earliest CNC machines appeared in 1940
  • CNC milling is a subtractive method that removes material from a chunk of metal using drill bits.
  • CNC machines use either 1, 2, 2.5, 3, or 5 axis.

Can you think of anything you use that may have been made with CNC technology?

CNC Technology for Jobs & Employment

Manufacturing Worker Deficit

(source: American factories are desperate for workers. It’s a $1 trillion problem - CNN)

  • American manufacturing activity is at a 37 year high as of March 2021.
  • As many as 2.1 manufacturing jobs are projected to be unfilled through 2030.
  • Part of the shortage is due to concerns about globalization and automation.

Types of CNC Jobs

  • CAD Designer: Models designs that are translated into G-Code.
  • CNC Mechanist: Programs the machinery  and assess mechanical issues.
  • CNC Operator: Stocks material and runs the machine.

CNC Technology for Art and Design

Can you think of designs you want to fabricate with a CNC machine?

What makes CNC a better  choice for making that object than 3D printing or laser cutting?
